Cloud computing for fluid dynamic simulation

Concept

The costs of using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools are very high and, in general, unaffordable for SMEs, as they include high software license costs, the need for high-performance computing infrastructure and, in addition, it requires technician staff specialized in its use.
The objective of this project was to allow an SME like Biocurve access to computational engineering services in the Cloud by eliminating access barriers. It has been carried out by the company Biocurve as an end user, the company Nabladot as a software provider and the BIFI Institute as an expert in HPC-CLOUD technology within the collaboration framework of the European CloudFLow project.

Advantage

NablaDot adapted CFD tools (mesh generator, Snappy HexMesh, fluid dynamics software, OpenFOAM, and ParaView post-process software) to simulate the heat exchanger of a biomass condensing boiler. All this open source software was migrated to the cloud infrastructure of the BIFI Institute within the CloudFlow project, whose computational resources were used to execute the CFD tools.
As a result, and after the necessary training provided by nablaDot, Biocurve started using CFD tools and integrating them into its design process. The time required to carry out the design of a prototype has been reduced by more than 50% and, in addition, the size of the current boiler has been reduced by more than 30%, maintaining the same performance.
Given the success of the project, initially planned only to optimize a 25 kW design, the development of a new 200 kW prototype has been undertaken in a short time, a undertaking that is difficult to approach using the traditional process.

Enganches Aragón

Concept

Enganches Aragón is a family business (SME) that manufactures and markets vehicle hitches in Spain with a strong international vocation. Its distribution network is present in more than 50 countries on the five continents.

Initially, the company did not have a specific industry 4.0 strategy, but the technological evolution itself led in many cases to use digital resources for the development of improvement and innovation projects of the company. However, it was aware that progress had to be made in this regard.

The diagnosis highlighted the need to develop product innovation as a key to its business strategy, as well as the need to incorporate plans towards total digitization. The diagnosis identified opportunities and they were given the form of a blueprint for their implementation. Consequently, a set of solutions have been implemented that are described in the next point.

Advantage

A system has been developed “for the sensorization and connectivity of the hitches that can interact with the trailer (or with the bike rack, luggage rack, ski rack…) and with the vehicle to guarantee its safety of use at all times. In addition to hitches, this firm manufactures and markets bike racks, luggage racks and Tow Box dog racks, ski racks, motorcycle racks, kayak racks, bars and roof boxes.

From the point of view of sustainability, in addition to controlling the consumption of each machine, intelligent lighting has been installed.
Regarding the digitization of the production process, it has been possible to control in real time the status of orders within the framework of the execution process.

To improve the treatment of clients, a private area has been created on the web that allows them to manage reports, invoices, see the progress of projects, etc. Likewise, we want to provide support tools to certain customers (those who have stock of their products) so that they are able to identify the hitch reference, version and vehicles for which it is approved and thus be able to adapt to the launch rate of new models, facilitating the management of their stocks.

We are working on the analysis of social network interactions and sponsorships to be able to segment clients and launch specialized promotions. Also, an online training plan for workers was developed.
In summary, the diagnosis made it possible to advance in an orderly and systematic manner in the deployment of 4.0 solutions for the digitization of the company, as well as reinforcing its investment in R&D&I.

Its ability to use advanced semantic analysis techniques give it a differential value that makes Moriarty® a unique tool.

Moriarty® allows you to obtain useful knowledge of your business from the capture, storage, processing and massive analysis of information.

Virtual Club Entrepreneurship in Aragon – Entrepreneur Dynamization Service

Concept

In this case we are not talking about a company, but about a service or program for a wide group; that of entrepreneurs, who form the Virtual Entrepreneurship Club in Aragon.

The Government of Aragon, through the Aragonese Development Institute, has developed the Virtual Entrepreneurship Club in Aragon as a virtual association of entrepreneurs. It is a channel for disseminating knowledge of all business initiatives in Aragon, in which each company that is born has an opportunity to make itself known, and each entrepreneur who wants to make his company a reality has a point of support. That is why it is intended to accompany all people with initiatives and entrepreneurial spirit residing in Aragon from this page.

Currently approximately 3,800 entrepreneurs are members and members of the Virtual Entrepreneurship Club in Aragon, which testifies to the success of this service

Advantage

The entrepreneur and the new creation companies can be integrated into a virtual group where they can interact, exchange experiences and access all available services (training, funding support, etc.).

Elvesys – Microfluidic Simulation Service

Concept

Elvesys is a French SME that provides a wide range of instruments for microfluidic monitoring.

Elvesys focuses on Plug and Play control equipment development of systems for microfluidic research. The objective of the success story was to develop a cloud application that can easily reproduce the microfluidic system prior to its construction, in order to evaluate its behavior. This will allow Elvesys and its customers to examine microfluidic hardware before building or purchasing it, and will help select the appropriate parts based on the specific objectives of each system.

The developed application not only describes the behavior of the complete system (i.e. pumps, pipes, controllers, chips) but also provides detailed information on the flow in the microfluidic chip of interest.

Advantage

The developed project allows ELVESYS to sell more microfluidic systems with improved control software. The benefits obtained are:

  • Easy access to microfluidics simulations.
  • Product quality improvement.
  • Better controllers.
  • Innovative business strategy.

Molas

Concept

The distribution required by the gas market, especially maritime distribution, implies a high risk of gas degradation with the economic losses that this entails. Accurately predicting the degradation that it will suffer directly influences the business since the quality at the destination determines the price of the product.

We start from information on the behavior and characteristics of gas obtained from transport history of shipping companies and gas companies.

Development of an intelligent model (prediction based on historical) of the physical model (modeling the behavior of gas).

Advantage

Thanks to the services developed, the MOLAS project delivers a differential and highly competitive product with the following value proposals:

  • Allow the operators of the storage and regasification terminals to handle LNG (Liquefied natural gas) in a safer and more efficient way.
  • Taking the necessary actions to comply with the quality requirements of each country.
  • Guarantee the quality of gas at destination.
